Last Sunday saw the club attend the Cork County Cross Country championships, hosted again by Carrignavar AC. Our novice ladies were first out on the course for the 4km event and were pleased with their individual performances. For some it was their first cross country outing, so well done to all. St. Catherine’s were well represented in the men’s novice 6km run also. 1pm sharp saw the start of the juvenile races in which St. Catherine’s had a total of 15 participants. Running conditions were favourable on the day that saw Megan Carr O’Reilly take silver in the U12, well done Megan as you were the only St. Catherine’s runner in a very big field of runners. Next to finish in the medals was Ciaran O’Brien in the U12 category, who along with his fellow under 12 team members ran a 2km race. Next to the start line were our 3 under 14 girls, with Laura Hayes winning bronze in a tight finish, Sara Barry and Caoimhe Hayes also did very well and finished the race strongly. James Clancy and Joanna Leahy-Dingivan represented the club in the boys U-14 and girls U-16 respectively. So all in all Well done to all the athletes who participates and represented both their families and club over the weekend.
Juvenile training continues Monday and Thursday evening at 7pm in Conna pitch. New members always welcome. Next Sunday 13th October see the club travel to West Muskerry AC who are hosting the Cork County intermediate and Juvenile Uneven Age Cross Country Championships.

Conna 5k Road Race
On Thursday 1st August St Catherines AC held its first road race in the village of Conna. The 5k race kicked off the Conna gathering festival weekend and even though the conditions were wet and windy it did not deter great numbers of runners, walkers and spectators from taking part in and supporting the event on the night. The weather did ease for the race itself and at 8pm the gun went, sending 192 runners up through the village and out the Tallow road.
The first mile was flat and fast and by the Castle a stream of runners could be seen all the way back through the village with East Cork athletes James McCarthy & Sean McGrath followed closely by Frank Hayes pulling clear of the chase pack.
Shortly after mile 1 the course turned right where the runners entered into a series of challenging hills for the next mile. A few meters back from the right turn onto the Ballynoe/Conna road the hills were no more and and the general pace increased as runners let loose for the gradual downhill decent back into the village. James McCarthy was the first man to cross the line in a time of 15:37 despite the challenging course profile. Aisling Moran from Leevale AC was the first woman home.

Our club would like to thank Conna Community Council, the prize sponsors, volunteers, participants, spectators and everyone who helped out with the organisation, course measurement and race registration. Thanks to James Daly for the photographs.
