John Treacy Dungarvan 10 – 2014

Last Sunday 26th January saw the 23rd running of the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 road race organised by West Waterford AC. 10 members of St Catherines AC joined over 1600 runners including Olympic silver medalist and world cross country champion John Treacy at the start line on a day where conditions were cold, wet and windy. The skys opened for the first couple of miles with ice cold rain and hail hammering runners as they left the town. Thankfully conditions abated for the rest of the race with some sun helping to raise body temperatures. All of our runners made it back across the finish line with some great performances considering the conditions. Well done to all of our fit for life runners some of whom raced the 10 mile distance for the first time on the day. Thanks also to our neighbors West Waterford AC for organising a great race despite the weather conditions. Looking forward to coming back again in 2015.

Great support for 3k fundraiser

On Tuesday the 17th of December the club held their annual charity 3k fundraiser. This year the club had great support from local runners and neighbouring clubs with 42 athletes taking part. The 6 lap course had a cross country setup and was in good condition with the recent dry weather.

The run started shortly after 7pm with a near 50-50 split of Men and Women crossing the start line. The Hayes duo of Laura and Anne-Marie followed by Joan Hough took first, second and third in the Women’s race. Positions were frequently exchanged in the men’s race from the off with local athlete Stephen Carr coming though strongly in the final lap to take first followed by Michael Byrne in second and John Beecher in third.

Nearly €500 euro was raised for St Vincent de Paul on the night. The club would like to thank everybody who helped out with the event from the people who set up the course and lighting, helped with parking, race registration, the start and finish lines, race results and provided a hot cuppa and biscuits to the runners on the night. We would also like to thank all the supporters and everyone who took part and made the event a success.

The 3k marks the end of the year for the club and we would like to wish all of our athletes, coaches, and friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

East Cork Even age & Senior XC Championships, Carraig na bhFear, 24th of November 2013

Well done to all of our Juvenile and Senior teams who took part in yesterdays East Cork Cross Country championships which were hosted by Carrag na bhFear AC. Some picture from the day…

Woodie’s DIY All Ireland Cross Country Championships 2013

Over the last few months our juvenile athletes have trained relentlessly. They have competed in local cross country events at East Cork, County Events, and at Munster Level, with great success. As a club we were delighted to have three of our Juvenile athletes competing at National Level last Sunday.

The big attendance at today’s Woodie’s DIY cross country championships at Santry Demesne in Dublin added very much to the atmosphere. The weather remained mild and the rain never materialized, much to the delight of everyone. Laura Hayes, Ciaran O Brien and Meghan Carr Reilly not only competed in the Even-age All Ireland  these three little musketeers brought home the silverware too!

Meghan was first up on the day and represented both county and province in the u12 Girls. This little pocket rocket was in the lead group from the start and maintained her position throughout to finish 3rd and was rewarded with an individual Bronze All Ireland Medal, and All Ireland Inter- provincial and County Team gold medals.

Minutes Later, Ciarán, representing both Munster and Cork took up position to start in the U12 Boys. As always with this young athlete, he put everything he had into the race and as a result was well rewarded with an All Ireland Inter-provincial Team Silver Medal and a Bronze All Ireland Inter County Team Medal. Whilst out of individual placing he finished 8th in Munster and 5th in Cork.

Laura Hayes had an exciting start in the U14 Girls. This unwavering young lady was determined to get ahead. Representing both County and Province Laura ran an excellent race and was hot on the heels of the winner throughout. Finishing 5th Laura received an individual All Ireland Medal as well as an Inter-Provincial Gold and a Silver Inter-County Team medal.

It was also very heartening to see so many of the juvenile athletes stay for the junior and senior races, and they were surely delighted to witness some marvelous races. The performance of Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC) was one of the most enthralling sights to be witnessed by our Juvenille athletes. Some of whom may even have broken their own personal bests flying around the course in pursuit of her!

Well done to you all. Your achievements are not only a testament of your own skill and determination but also a sign of a club that is going from strength to strength. Special thanks to our coaches and trainers who have worked so hard with our athletes all season. Thanks also to the loyal supporters who took to the road in the early hours of Sunday morning to support all who ran.

Uneven age Munster Championships 2013 – Castlelyons

Another successful week for St. Catherine’s Club. On Sunday, 10th Nov we had 12 Juvenile athletes competing at the Uneven championships in neighbouring Castlelyons. As a neighbouring club we would like to thank St. Nicholas for hosting the Championships. It was a pleasure to arrive at such a well organised event, with a true cross country course, demanding but fair.

U9 girls were very well represented by Lelia O’Reilly, Lucy Aherne, Karina Hartnett and Lucy Barry who achieved overall 11th team placing. Lelia O’ Reilly gave a sign of things to come, winning her first Munster Medal. Placed 7th individually, Lelia also received a Munster, County Medal. In a blistering race, Meghan Carr O’ Reilly (U11 girls) won her second Munster Medal in as many weeks. Meghan and Sarah Morrison (Castlelyons AC) battled for position throughout. Sarah was triumphant and won Gold, with Meghan close on her heels to receive second place individually as well as another County team medal. Tom Hartnett and Gearoid O’ Brien (U11 Boys) ran a very strong race and are both continuing to improve throughout the season. Sarah Barry (U13 Girls), showed great determination and strength in what was a very competitive race. Kevin Barry, James Hayes and Ciaran O Brien lined up for the U13 Boys, all boys showed a great performance throughout. Laura Hayes also received a Munster Medal in the U15 girls, another club member receiving a second Munster Medal in as many weeks. Well done to all who competed last Sunday.

Intermediate Championships

Well done to Ann-Marie and Kevin Hayes who ran in the intermediate section. In what was a very fast paced race Annie ran a fantastic race and was unfortunate to finish just outside medal placing.

National Championships

Best of Luck to Laura Hayes, Meghan Carr O’ Reilly and Ciarán O’ Brien who are travelling to Santry Demesne, Dublin, next weekend to represent our Club, County and Province in the Woodie’s DIY AAI Inter-County & Juvenile Even Age Cross Country Championships.

ST CATHERINE’S ATHLETIC CLUB MOURN THE LOSS OF A KEY MEMBER.

It was with great sadness that members of our club assembled outside the church in Conna to form a Guard of Honour for the late Catherine Leahy Dingivan, last Friday evening. Following a brief illness borne with incredible strength and dignity this beautiful person who touched all of our hearts was heartbreakingly on her journey to being laid to rest.

Catherine was a true treasure of our club and a key committee member both at Juvenile and Senior Level. St. Catherine’s AC began to develop about five years ago, since then Catherine played a central with our junior members, her bright positive spirit was always to the fore namely in the form of her fabulous smile and her sharp wit not to mention all the unassuming work she carried out which some of us know little about. At senior level Catherine always and unselfishly made herself available to record results, clock time trials as well as attending county board meetings once a month. The loss to us and our community is palpable however at this time our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with Catherine’s family.

“Catherine may you rest in peace our thoughts will always be with you”.

On Sunday (27th Oct) some of our club members travelled to Limerick Race Course for the Munster Juvenille Even age Cross Country Championships. Leila Carr was first to the start line for the club (U10 Girls). In what was a very demanding course Leila showed great potential and finished well. Next out was Leyla’s sister Meghan (U12 girls) who powered home with the club’s first medal of the day winning an individual Munster silver as well as Gold for team placing. James Hayes and  Ciarán O Brien (U12 boys) both showed true strength and determination. James ran a very strong race and has continued to improve all season. Ciarán gave everything he had finished 11th , received an individual Munster medal as well as gold for team placing. Caoimhe and Laura Hayes (U14 girls) both ran a wonderful race. Caoimhe showed consistency and strength throughout. Laura blistered into the chute winning and individual bronze as well as a silver medal for team placing. Laura, Ciarán and Meghan will now represent Munster at the All Ireland’s on Nov 17th in Dublin. To all our competitors on the day well done! Well done also to two of our club members who competed in the Dublin City Marathon, Mike and John- hope the lactic acid is subsiding!
