East Cork Track & Field Championships

The 2022 edition of the  East Cork Track & Field Championships were held in Tower Park, Youghal over the two weekends of the 10th and 24th of April. As usual, there was a strong level of participation from clubs in East Cork, and we can certainly include St Catherine’s AC as one of those.

The club were incredibly successful over the two day event, and many of the participating athletes secured a handful of medals for their fine efforts.

Some of our younger club members were very prolific, picking up medals in a series of events.

Mary Jane Casey won gold in the u11girls 80 metres, 300 metres, 600 metres and Long Jump events. Wow!

Molly Casey picked up gold in u10 girls 80 metres, bronze in 200 metres, silver in 300 metres, bronze in u10 Long Jump and gold in Turbo Javelin.

Ciara O’Connell was also really successful picking up bronze medals in the 80 metres u10 girls; gold in 200 metres; bronze in the 300 metres and gold in the Long Jump.

Eoin Ronayne picked up golds in u10 boys 60 and 200 metres, while Aimee Kearney won gold in her u13 girls 600 metres race. Conor Ronayne showed his true form by winning, his u13 boys 300 metre sprint as well as winning the 600 and 800 metre races . Brilliant stuff, Conor.

Callum Geary picked up a gold for the u9 boys 60 metre race and silver in the 200 metres while Charlie Nicholson won silver in the boys u16 800 and 1,500 metre  races and a gold in the 200 metre sprint. Well done Charlie!

Aoife O’Connor came second in the girls u11 300 metre race while Adam Fitzgerald came second in the u10 200 metre race. Abby Leahy finished third overall in the u14 girls High Jump and what a fabulous achievement for our relay runners who won all around them.

Charlotte Norman finished second in the u15 girls 1,500 metre race as did James O’Connor in the boys u15 version followed home by  Sean Walsh in third spot. James also finished 3rd in the u15 200 metres.

Ciara Hayes picked up silver in her u14 1,500 girls race and a bronze in the 200 metres .

Our All-Ireland champion, Kenneth O’Connell secured gold by winning the u12 800 metre boys race. He also came first in the u112 boys 300 metre sprint.

In the boys 300 metre race, Ronan Geaney finished 1st and Alex Keane 3rd spot. Alex also picked up a gold medal in the u10 boys Long Jump while Ada Shiels won silver for the u10 girls Turbo Javelin.

Well done to Cian Dunning and Sarah O’Connell, two of our older athletes in the u17-19 age category, who picked up bronze medals in the Shot Putt event.

There were golds for the u10 girls and u10 boys; silver for u12 boys; bronze for u14 girls and silver for u17-19 girls.

If I haven’t lost count, that’s 41 individual and 5 team medals.

That’s an amazing achievement.
